Bring your identity along.

Ostrilo’s Chrome Web Store launch is coming soon. Until then, you can build the extension from source and try the signing flow in your browser.

Build your own copy.

You’ll need Git, Node.js 22, pnpm 11.5.2, and a desktop browser. These commands build the extension, rather than this website.

git clone https://github.com/macro88/ostrilo.git
cd ostrilo
pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
pnpm run build

The extension repository is being prepared for its public release. If it isn’t available yet, check back when the launch is announced.

Full source-build instructions

Load it in your browser.

Chrome & Chromium

Load unpacked

Open chrome://extensions, enable Developer mode, and choose Load unpacked. Select .output/chrome-mv3 from your extension checkout, then pin Ostrilo.

Firefox development build

Load a temporary add-on

Run pnpm run build:firefox. Open about:debugging, select This Firefox, and load .output/firefox-mv3/manifest.json. Temporary add-ons are removed when Firefox restarts.

Browser setup and release details

Make your first signing decision.

  1. Set up an identity. Create or import a disposable key while evaluating the source build, and set your vault password.
  2. Keep your backup. When creating your first identity, save the encrypted onboarding backup and keep its passphrase separately. Preserve an independent copy of any key you import.
  3. Connect a Nostr website. Choose its browser-extension sign-in option on an HTTPS page. Decide whether it may read your public key.
  4. Review and sign. Check the website, identity, event kind, and content in Ostrilo. Approve or deny the request, then see your decision in Activity.

Backup guide · Managing identities

A few useful answers.

Do I need an Ostrilo account?

No. Your vault lives in the browser. There’s no Ostrilo account or developer server involved in signing.

Can I use a key I already have?

Yes. You can import an existing Nostr private key and keep the same identity. Keep your original recovery copy somewhere safe.

Does the site get my private key?

No. It receives your public key after consent, or a signed event after approval or a matching permission rule.

Can I choose my own relays?

Yes. Manage relay addresses in Ostrilo’s settings. They’re used to look up and publish your Nostr profile.

Where do I send feedback?

Use GitHub Issues for bugs and suggestions. Include the browser, extension revision, and steps to reproduce. Use the private security process for vulnerabilities.
